Team Avatar Returns: Official Trailer for ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ Drops

After half a decade of eager anticipation from fans, ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ is set to make its debut on Paramount+ on July 25th.

The new feature film is a sequel to the acclaimed series Avatar: The Last Airbender created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, which saw the Airbender Aang (the titular Avatar) and his friends Katara, Sokka and Toph go up against the merciless Fire Nation and its leader Zuko in a bid to rid the world of the Fire Nation’s tyrannical expansion. Running for three seasons, the Emmy Award-winning series remains one of the most beloved pieces of animation of the 2000s and has a lasting legacy that includes a sequel series, a live-action film adaptation and a currently running series on Netflix.

‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ takes place several years after the original series and concerns Aang and his friends embarking on an epic quest to unlock an ancient power that could potentially spell the return of the Airbenders. However, it is a race against time, as a new evil faction is seeking this new power for themselves and using it to upend the harmony that Aang fought so hard to usher in.

The trailer opens with a brief recap of the original series and gives us a tantalizing glimpse of the prosperous era in which all the Nations of the world (Earth, Water, Air and Fire) now coexist peacefully following the Hundred Year War of Avatar. We soon see the now grown-up Aang release Tagah, an Airbender from the past and him making a vow with Aang to “heal the past”.

However, the villainous Kallak announces her plan to seize power from the Airbenders. We hear Aang seeking to bring back balance to the world while the rest of his friends prepare for battle before a final triumphant shot of the returning characters as Katara announces that Team Avatar will stand together against this new threat. The trailer closes out with an epic look at Aang’s full power.

Originally announced in 2021, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has had a turbulent production. From its widely publicized change from a tentpole theatrical release to a streaming exclusive, to a devastating leak which saw several clips and eventually the full film uploaded to X/Twitter, the road has been rocky for this new addition to Nickelodeon and Paramount’s Avatar Universe.

That said, if this trailer is anything to go by, this new entry is exactly what the fans of the franchise have been clamouring for. We see beautifully animated vistas, breathtaking action and a continuation of the world and characters which are so dear to so many (that and some cute moments between Aang and Katara, one of the most popular fictional couples of the past two decades). The trailer has the showings of a satisfying and grand cinematic turn for the beloved franchise.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is directed by Lauren Montgomery and co-directed by Steve Ahn and William Mata. The film’s screenplay is written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost, based on the story by Hedrick, Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, and Kenneth Lin.

It stars Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko and Dionne Quan as Toph. The film also features the voices of Dee Bradley Baker, Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, and Ken Jeong.

One of the most anticipated releases of the summer, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender releases exclusively on Paramount+ on July 25th.
