‘Solos’ Creator, David Weil, on Anthologies, Isolation, and his Directorial Debut
For many, 2020 brought isolation, reflection, and eventually, hope; David Weil, creator of Solos, encapsulates these emotions in his new anthology streaming series.
In an era of hardship and anxieties, David Weil’s ‘Solos’ is a series that is able to piece through audiences and drive straight to feelings and mindsets exacerbated by the pandemic. An anthology series showcasing the talents of players like Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, Anthony Mackie, Morgan Freeman, and others, all eight episodes prove to be a tour de force of performance and storytelling.
Hot off the success of ‘Hunters”’ Weil, describes his knack for telling stories about those who feel voiceless as a trait he attributes to his grandmother. In ‘Solos’, his strengths as a writer shine, tapping into the play-like qualities of each contained narrative, allowing each actor to “return to form”, as he puts it. Because each episode of ‘Solos’ takes place with a singular actor in a singular location, crafting the narrative of each story was a vulnerable creative space for the writer/director. ‘Solos’ also marks the directorial debut of the Weil. He describes the challenging task of taking directorial reigns as an incredible learning experience, especially as a writer.
Weil’s nuance in capturing performances from world class talent is a showcase of raw emotions, and the dual nature of isolation and togetherness. Solos is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Check out the rest of FilmSpeak’s interview with David Weil below:
