‘Mortal Kombat’ was among the first of the HBO Max/Theatrical hybrid releases of 2021, reviving the franchise and giving a complete makeover to the original 1995 cult classic. The film introduces us to a lesser-known character within the universe, Cole Young, an MMA fighter struggling to reach his full potential, sucked into an ongoing chase by Subzero who has a massive grudge to settle. From there, Cole is taken to the temple of Lord Raiden where he meets plenty of fan favorites; Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Jax, Kato, among others as they prepare for the greatest tournament in the universe.

Now I will admit, I was not among those who were pleased with the bombastic story that is Mortal Kombat. The melodrama, bland screenplay, and characters who felt like a shell of who they’re destined to be. That, paired with the fact that despite its name, there’s no massive brawl or “kombat” to be had here. It honestly feels like an odd-timed precursor to what was actually expected by anyone familiar with the franchise. However, there are still enough individual moments, iconic quotes, and gnarly kills to keep the engagement of most.

Negative criticism aside, what cannot be denied is the stunning visual and riveting auditory outing here. From the nail-biting, Kurosawa-like opening sequence, Subzero freezing off the limbs of Jax in their first showdown, to the final awaited battle between Scorpion and Subzero, there are plenty of immersive feats to experience. What may be the newest addition to what can be referred to as the “reference catalog,” This 4K UHD Blu-ray is the ultimate resource to have in reach to make all of your friends and family absolutely jealous of your amazing home theatre setup. With a solid mix of HDR, that enhances the eye-catching visual clarity and a Dolby Atmos audio track, you can’t get much better than this release.
