'Star Trek' Anniversary Release of Classic Films Boldly Goes Into 4K
The perennial series celebrates its 55th Anniversary with a series of amazing releases, including the first four original Trek films, now on 4K.
It has been a mainstay of science fiction ever since fans fought for the original television show. It was once of the first mainstream examples of ‘viral fandom’ as CBS was inundated with letters to have the classic return to television. That fandom helped spawn a feature film franchise, half a dozen spin off shows, and now, a major addition to the series Trek collector.
Today marks the 55th anniversary of the September 8, 1966 premiere of Star Trek, and as a result, Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment will debut gorgeously remastered editions of the first four films, alongside a limited-edition Blu-ray Steelbook of the complete original series.
For the first time ever, Trekkies can pick up the original four Trek films — ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’, ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’, ‘Star Trek III: The Search for Spock’, and ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’ in 4K Ultra HD. Along with access to the digital copies of the theatrical versions of each film, collectors will also find hours of previously released bonus content on the disks.
In addition to these collector’s editions, the first four Star Trek films with be available on individual Blu-rays with all of the same bonus content. The Blu-ray release of Star Trek: The Original Series will come in the highly collectible Steelbook packaging, and will feature every episode of the series alongside over nine hours of previously released special features, interviews, commentaries, documentaries, and much more.
The updated picture quality of these releases are absolutely phenomenal, as you would expect from a 4K upgrade. The first three films are by far the most cinematic, and feel like a good fit for the next generation of home viewing. The most disappointing aspect of this collection is the fact that for this grandiose 55th Anniversary celebration, there are no real additions to previously release features. Special features are one of the only defences true collectors will use in the argument against digital downloads. Without anything new, the upgrade is not that ‘bold’ was we boldly where we have sadly… gone before.
