The Larger-than-life, Live-Action adaptation of ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’ is sure to be a fun watch for family movie night, now on blu-ray.
‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’ remained a very consistent favorite for children of all ages, spanning decades of Scholastic books and even an animated series that aired in the early 2000s. As someone who, as a child, often tuned into the television show every day after school, there was never a moment over the years to which I sat eagerly waiting for a live-action adaptation of the character. However, in the current climate we live in, quite literally anything and everything has the potential for that live-action treatment, and ‘Clifford’s’ name was called on much sooner than many may have anticipated.
The film itself tends to lack anything special in quality, and it unsurprisingly follows a very “paint by numbers” plot, but it’s obvious which audience ‘Clifford’ is aimed towards and it’s hard not to believe children will be pleased. Emily Elizabeth quickly grows attached to a peculiar four-legged friend who’s much more than initially meets the eye. When Clifford grows ten feet overnight, Emily needs all the help she can get to take care of her new pet, and things only continue to spiral out of hand when a mad scientist goes on the hunt to capture Clifford for his evil experiments. It takes all of New York City to help Emily and Clifford escape the scientist before it’s too late.
While there is an abundance of humor that will go over the heads of most, and antics that defy all science and logic, it packs plenty of heart to fill its quite large exterior to keep your little ones invested. Surprisingly enough, the CGI-fest that is Clifford The Big Red Dog is nowhere near the atrocity I expected and actually succeeds at looking realistic. Well, as realistic as a giant red dog possibly can look. The adventure is taken to the sky, the river, and even the basketball court that while nonsensical, is never short of entertaining.
