What you should watch on Netflix in 2024

Netflix in 2023 surely delivered some of its best content yet with movies like ‘Rebel Moon: Part 1’, ‘Extraction 2’, ‘Heart of Stone’, ‘The Killer’, among others. After recently releasing a teaser trailer with some of the new and returning content we’re getting this year, let’s take a look at some of my most anticipated Netflix films and shows coming in 2024 that you should be aware of.

‘BACK IN ACTION’

Starring Cameron Diaz & Jamie Foxx

It’s been almost 10 years since Cameron Diaz’s last film appearance in Sex Tape with Jason Segel back in 2014. With Back in Action, Diaz is, well, back in action alongside her new co-star Jamie Foxx. Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown. The pair play seemingly average parents with a big secret: They used to be incredibly skilled secret agents. Of course, the couple’s low-key suburban existence does not last long. Soon, the two are dragged back into the life they left behind, with explosive results.

Slated to release later this year.

‘BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F’

Starring Eddie Murphy

Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is back in action in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy. It’s been nearly 30 years since we last saw the Detroit cop, but he’s finally heading out on a new case. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Axel on patrol back in Beverly Hills, with both returning and new friends.

Rebel Moon: Part 1 ends in a cliffhanger where after Noble’s death, he is recovered by a machine and has a vision speaking with Balisarius, who was known as a war hero who preferred fighting alongside his men rather than leading from above. He led an attack on Kora's homeworld and apparently saw something in her when he found her there as a child.. Telling Noble in his vision to bring Kora or he is to face deadly consequences as he revives him to continue his objective. Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. ‘SPACEMAN’

Starring Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano.

In Spaceman, based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, Adam Sandler plays Jakub, an astronaut adrift in the cosmos. And even in the context of the actor and comedian’s more dramatic performances (Hustle and Uncut Gems come to mind), the film sees Sandler exploring more somber and introspective territory like nothing he’s done before. Months into a solitary research mission deep in Space, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanus (a spider voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late.

‘COBRA KAI’ SERIES FINALE

Starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Martin Kove, Xolo Maridueña, Jacob Bertrand, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Peyton List, Gianni DeCenzo, Courtney Henggeler, & Vanessa Rubio.

Cobra Kai takes place over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with the continuation of the inescapable conflict between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). The first five seasons are now streaming with the series set to return for a sixth and final season. Season 5 ended with Kreese (Martin Kove) faking his death and escaping from prison, setting up his return as a possible antagonist. With Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) now arrested, things should be quieter in the Valley, unless Kreese seeks payback against Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). Johnny might also have his hands full with a baby at some point soon, with Carmen (Vanessa Rubio) now expecting…. Aside from the baby being expected, what viewers should definitely look to expect is way more action, drama and suspense than previous seasons as this next and final season has been told to be “the best one of the series”.

‘OUTER BANKS’ SEASON 4

Starring Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Carlacia Grant, Austin North, and Drew Starkey.

Outer Banks is a coming-of-age story that follows the tight-knit group of Pogues (John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo) as they navigate a chain of events filled with mystery, adventure, a high-stakes treasure hunt, and the escalating conflict with their rivals. Outer Banks' third season can only be described as wild, capped off with a feature-length finale packed with drama. The search for John B's father Big John finally comes to an end, as does the Pogues' hunt for El Dorado, the Venezuelan city of gold. Of course, nothing runs smoothly and not everyone makes it out alive. With the treasure hunt being far from over, the Pogues are returning for more action and adventure with a fourth season of Outer Banks this year. While one chapter of the Pogues’ story has closed, the next phase has only just begun, and the hunt for Blackbeard’s gold is on the horizon.

Squid Game, the most popular show on Netflix in 2020-2021, tells the story of a group of desperate contestants who risk their lives to become the final winner in a mysterious extreme survival game with a $45.6 billion won cash prize. In the ending of Squid Game Season 1, the salesman made another appearance as Gi-hun boards a train on his way to the airport to see his daughter in the U.S. While Gi-hun failed to catch the Salesman, he confronts the person that the Salesman recruited for the game, telling him not to join and taking his Squid Game card. As he is about to board the plane, Gi-hun calls the number on the card and is intercepted by the Front Man. He and the Front Man exchange threats, and Gi-hun decides not to get on his flight. This teases his journey in Squid Game season 2, which promises to see Gi-hun seeking his revenge.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The show is produced by Universal Content Productions for Netflix. The Umbrella Academy premiered in 2019 and follows a group of estranged siblings with superpowers who are reunited after the death of their father. The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy is coming, bringing with it even more superpowered sibling rivalry, answers to one of the series’ biggest mysteries, and hopefully another epic dance sequence. The finale of The Umbrella Academy season 3 sees the Hargreeves (both Umbrellas and Sparrows) venture through the portal in the White Buffalo Suite in the Hotel Obsidian to the Hotel Oblivion. Last season ended with a major twist such as, there being a new timeline dictated by the family patriarch, Reginald (Colm Feore), and the siblings no longer have their powers. However, that’s not the only strange thing in this timeline, where the stakes are higher than ever before…. there are new enemies who want to see them wiped from existence, but how do they face them without their powers? And will the siblings ever get them back?
