The news was broken today during a panel at the first annual BlumFest, a virtual event held to celebrate the Halloween season and reveal new information and announcements on upcoming projects, hosted by Blumhouse CEO and founder Jason Blum.

On top of the announcement that a fifth “Insidious” film was even in the works, it was announced that series star Patrick Wilson will not only return as his character Josh Lambert in the movie but will make his directorial debut with the project. It was not announced if Rose Byrne would be reprising her role as Renai Lambert in any capacity.

Blum and Wilson introduced the idea for the fifth film as following Dalton (played by Simpkins) going off to college 10 years after the events of the 2018’s “Insidious: The Last Key” as the Lambert family continues being haunted and terrorized by the entities and specters of The Further.

When introducing the project, Wilson had this to say:

“I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious instalment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices. Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the Further we go.”

The film’s story was crafted by Leigh Whannell, who is attached to the project as an executive producer and has served throughout the franchise as a series creator, writer, and producer, and even directed 2015’s “Insidious: Chapter 3” in his own directorial debut.

The script has been penned by Scott Teems, head writer of the Sundance TV drama “Rectify” and screenwriter of the upcoming “Halloween Kills” sequel also for Blumhouse.

Whannell will be joined by Oren Peli, a frequent producer and collaborator with Blumhouse, as an executive producer on the project along with series creator and original director James Wan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Steven Schneider.

No release date was set, but with a script already completed, it is expected to enter production sometime next year for a prospective 2022 release date.
