Amazon Studios announced Thursday a new partnership with Blumhouse Productions to release a slate of eight movies shirking theatrical releases in favor of going directly to streaming on Amazon Prime.

This venture has been titled “Welcome to Blumhouse” and will represent new and creative content for Amazon Studios as the first thematically-connected series of movies on the streaming service. All the films will deal with common themes of family and love and how these forces can have a positive or negative influence on our lives. These themes will be expressed and told through the lens of Blumhouse’s signature creepy and suspenseful psychological thrillers.

When discussing the partnership, Marci Wiseman and Jeremy Gold of Blumhouse Television had this to say:

“We’re beyond excited that the visions of these talented filmmakers will finally be seen by genre fans around the world, especially during this time when people are seeking to escape and be entertained. And we love the innovative idea of programming like the classic drive-in or repertory theater experience. Amazon have been incredible partners, linking arms and supporting the creative visions throughout the process of making these films."

The first two films (“The Lie” and “Black Box”) will premiere on Amazon Prime on October 6th, while the next two films (“Evil Eye” and “Nocturne”) will premiere the following week on October 13th. The final four films, currently untitled, will premiere in early 2021.

“The Lie” is written and directed by Indian-Canadian filmmaker Veena Sud and stars Joey King, Peter Sarsgaard, and Mireille Enos. The film will follow a teenage girl (King) who spontaneously murders her best friend and her parents (Sarsgaard and Enos) who urgently try to cover it up while getting caught up in the resulting turmoil and deception.

“Black Box,” from director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, Jr. and a script co-written by Kuffour with Stephen Herman, stars Mamoudou Athie (from the upcoming “Jurassic World: Dominion”) as a single father who suffers amnesia after losing his wife in a horrific car accident and seeks an experimental treatment to recover his memories. The resulting experimentation leaves him questioning who he really is, and what he really remembers. “The Lie” and “Black Box” will premiere on Amazon Prime on Tuesday, October 6th.

Premiering on October 13th, “Evil Eye” will follow a single mother who comes to believe her daughter’s new boyfriend is somehow linked to a dark and personal event in her history. The film is based on a best-selling 2019 Audible Original audiobook from Indian author Madhuri Shekar. “Evil Eye” will be directed by Indian-American directors Elan and Rajeev Dassani and will feature Priyanka Chopra-Jonas as an executive producer.

“Nocturne” will follow a shy, musically-talented teenage girl at an elite music academy who discovers an enigmatic notebook belonging to a recently-deceased peer and its haunting contents. “Nocturne” is written and directed by Zu Quirke in her directorial debut and will star Sydney Sweeney and Madison Iseman.

These four films will release on Amazon Prime on October 6th and October 13th. The back half of this eight-movie deal will release sometime in Spring 2021.
