'The Powerpuff Girls' Live-Action Coming To CW From Diablo Cody & Greg Berlanti
Sugar, spice and everything nice… these are the ingredients CW will use to create ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ live-action series; Deadline reports. The live-action series is in development with Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) and Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars) announced as series writers with CW alumni Greg Berlanti producing. Regnier and Cody will also be executive producing via Vita Vera Films and Berlanti Productions. This will be another in a long line of Berlanti superhero-verse including ‘The Flash,’ ‘Supergirl,’ and ‘Arrow.’
In classical reboot fashion, the series will center around the girls now in their twenties feeling resentful for losing out on a normal childhood in favor of fighting crime for Professor Utonium, their creator/father.
The original cartoon, aired in 1998 and created by Craig McCracken for Cartoon Network, was positively received and ran for six seasons until 2005. A feature length animated film was produced in 2002 as well as several more specials, an anime spinoff, comics and video games. A reboot animated series, featuring updated animation and graphics also ran from 2016 to 2019 to mixed reviews but generally leaning positive for fans of the original.
Both the 1998 'The Powerpuff Girls’ cartoon and the 2016 version were animated and kept the girls kindergartner-aged. The new live-action series will likely take on more mature themes as Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup reconcile with their former lives as superheroes.
It’s unclear whether fan favorite villains like Mojo Jojo or H.I.M. will return but if the series is a continuation of the Hannah-Barbera produced mythology, there is a good chance they will at least be referenced in some way.
If you find yourself yearning for the pint-sized super kids of yesteryear, Hulu is currently streaming all 78 episodes of the original 1998 series as well as all three seasons of the 2016 version. HboMax also has both options available under their Cartoon Network section of the app.
