New 'The Batman' Trailer showcases a Much More Ruthless version of the Caped Crusader

The new trailer has lots of stylized Neo noir feel with first looks at new characters and more great quotes from Pattinson’s Batman

Warner Brothers and DC released another trailer for ‘The Batman’ on Saturday courtesy of the DC Fandome. The new look has already caused a lot of internet buzz as the 3 minute trailer seems to have gone down just as well as the first. Ever since the first trailer released at last year’s DC Fandome, fans have been itching for more Robert Pattinson as Batman content which they got in spades with this new trailer plus a couple first looks at other new characters in the film.

The trailer starts off with what looks like Paul Dano, who plays ‘The Riddler’,  being apprehended by Gotham PD. It seems as if he may be intentionally being caught, not unlike another villain in ‘The Dark Knigh’ films. We then see different shots of Robert Pattinson as Batman fighting packs of goons while brushing off gun shots. At one point in the trailer we hear him say that he doesn’t care if he dies, pointing to a much darker and grittier version of Bruce Wayne that we have not yet seen in live action. Pattinson in the past has said that he doesn’t see Batman as a hero, saying “Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”  This may hint towards how Pattinson will play the character, with a more ruthless tone. This film seems to take inspiration from the comics ‘Batman: Year Two’ which is based around the second year that Bruce Wayne has dawned the cape and cowl, as well as ‘Batman: The Long Halloween’ as this movie is being told as a story of Batman’s detective skills and will be set around the halloween season as well.

We also got our first look at Colin Farrell as ‘Oswald Cobblepot’ aka ‘The Penguin’. Almost unrecognizable with his prosthetics and a unique American accent, Farrell narrates is teased as having a smaller role in the film but only time will tell. Another character getting more screen time in this trailer is Zoe Kravitz as ‘Catwoman’, where we see more of a relationship between her and Batman, which is more akin to the comics, while most movies has seen them as either friends or foes rather than romantic leads. Andy Serkis’ ‘Alfred Penyworth’ also makes an appearance with words of warning for the man he has cared for since a child saying “If this continues, it won't be long before you have nothing left”, further cementing the notion that this Batman will be much more vengeful and cynical then ever before.

The Dark Knight’ series took the route of making a more realistic setting for Gotham and all of its characters but Matt Reeves seems to have gone towards the direction of a much more stylized Gotham akin to that of a Neo noir film. This is consistent with the film’s plot of showing off Batman’s detective skills more than ever before. One thing is for sure, after this trailer, the hype is real and the anticipation for the film has skyrocketed since the first trailer. With this trailer, it just gives fans more to be excited about.

‘The Batman’ is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Collin Farrell and Paul Dano as The Riddler, and is scheduled to release in theatres on March 4th, 2022.
