Gal Gadot to Play The Wicked Queen in Disney’s Live Action “Snow White”
Gal Gadot will try and prove to be the fairest of them all.
The “Wonder Woman” star will be going from super heroine to classic Disney villainy as the studio has chosen her to play the evil queen in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”, the live action adaptation of the 1937 landmark animated feature. “The Amazing Spider Man” director Marc Webb will be helming and the songs will be written by the “La La Land” team of Ben Pasek and Justin Paul. Rachel Zegler, star of the upcoming “West Side Story” remake will play the titular princess.
The original Snow White was the very first full length animated film and helped make Disney the formidable leader of animation and family entertainment. Being such an important feature of the studio’s legacy, they have taken a careful approach in bringing a live action adaptation to the screen. It also didn’t help that Universal had their own live action version of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale in 2012 “Snow White and The Huntsman” which had Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the Queen. That movie was a darker “Lord of the Rings” type fantasy whereas this version will likely follow the path of its cartoon inspiration
The Queen sounds like the type of role designed for an actress of Gadot’s caliber. The character is one of Disney’s most beloved villains as this was a cold hearted woman who wanted to get rid of her stepdaughter for simply being more beautiful than she was by tempting her with a poison apple. Being a live action film, it is likely the character will be given more screen time, especially with Gadot now on board.
Gadot is certainly keeping herself busy with numerous projects in some stage of production. She will be seen opposite Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in the action comedy “Red Notice” which hits select theatres this weekend before premiering on Netflix November 12 and has Kenneth Branagh’s anticipated Agatha Christie adaptation “Death on the Nile” finally reaching the big screen in February. In addition, Gadot has many projects in development including Netflix’s spy thriller “Heart of Stone”, Patty Jenkins’ historical epic “Cleopatra” and of course “Wonder Woman 3”.
While Disney’s live action remakes have often been soulless cash grabs, one element that has worked in a lot of them is the villain and the actors cast in them. From Angelina Jolie in “Maleficent” to Cate Blanchett in “Cinderella” and Luke Evans in “Beauty and the Beast”, the studio realizes that the evil men and women are iconic characters and getting stars that are charismatic enough to take on these roles has been a priority for them. Gadot certainly has the screen presence for a character like the Queen and can use both her looks and charm to craft a unique take on the character.
