FilmSpeak EXCLUSIVE: First Track from Festival Favourite 'FLEE' Soundtrack
Nearly 12 months after it’s debut at Sundance, the award-winning animated documentary ‘Flee’ finally hits theaters today.
Flee tells the extraordinary true story of a man, Amin, on the verge of marriage which compels him to reveal his hidden past for the first time. The film is directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen and scored by composer Uno Helmersson.
To coincide with its release, we here at FilmSpeak were given an exclusive unreleased track from the film’s soundtrack. The track, titled “Fleeing Kabul” (feat. Mari Samuelsen), is a captivating extension of the true story at the heart of the documentary.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021. Shortly after, Neon acquired the US, rights to the film respectively. The film was initially set to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2020, but the festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It eventually screened at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2021 New York Film Festival in September 2021, where it drew critical acclaim, with jurors calling it "an instant classic". The critics consensus reads "Depicting the refugee experience through vivid animation, Flee pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking to present a moving memoir of self-discovery" and TIFF audiences selecting it as Runner-Up for the People’s Choice Award for Documentaries.
