Warner Bros. premiered a new 2-and-a-half-minute red band trailer for “Mortal Kombat” today. The video game adaptation is set to be released on April 16th in theaters and on HBO Max. Directed by Simon McQuoid in his directorial debut, the film is based on the 1992 video game of the same name, and features multiple iconic characters battling it out: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Lord Raiden are some of the ones most prominently featured in the trailer.

From the still images we’ve received thus far, fans of the franchise have been put under the impression the film was going to be some grim adaptation of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise that took itself overly seriously. However, with the Russian trailer leak earlier today, fans were met with a much sillier tone, appearing to look far less serious with its trailer score being similar to the earlier 1995 adaptation. Thankfully, the official trailer maintains the initial darker, grimmer impression of the earlier photos.

The trailer ultimately featured some brilliant gory moments, most notably when Sub-Zero stabs Scorpion towards the end. The R-rated trailer brings fans of the old video game franchise and newcomers alike together, with the fatalities looking great and the updated CGI working perfectly for the brutal, blood-splattering nature of the franchise.

The problem “Mortal Kombat” runs into is the same as with other recent Warner Bros. releases. In England and many other parts of Europe, with theaters being closed and the country on a nationwide lockdown, the deal between HBO Max and Warner Bros. has infuriated many film lovers. With theaters unlikely to open, even after the lockdown is gradually lifted, the only way for us, and the vast majority of people around the world to watch this would be to pay $15 for a single watch, the same price as a simple HBO Max monthly subscription.

That aside, the new Mortal Kombat trailer is exactly what fans wanted. 25 years on from the first Mortal Kombat film, fans will be excited to watch iconic characters such as Mileena (Sissi Stringer), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), and the iconic Sub-Zero (Joe Tamlin) and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), battle it out this April. Let’s hope the gory, intense nature of this trailer is utilized properly, or we might just have another fatality on our hands.
