James Gunn makes his superhero cinema return with a Hard-R take on DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’.

Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled its first red-band trailer for James Gunn’s highly anticipated “The Suicide Squad”, which teased the film’s tone, aesthetic and hard-R antics. “The Suicide Squad” will be the tenth film in the DC Extended Universe and serves as a sequel/reboot to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad”, after that first film’s critical failure. The film will also serve as a set-up to the TV series Peacemaker”, a spin-off of the movie starring John Cena as the titular character, set to hit HBO Max in January of 2022.

“The Suicide Squad” boasts a star-studded cast, with Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis returning from the first film as Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and Amanda Waller respectively. Additionally, the movie will introduce brand new characters including Cena’s Peacemaker, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, David Dastlmachian as The Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchoir as Ratcatcher 2, Michael Rooker as Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Sean Gunn as Weasel, Flula Borg as Javelin and, the cherry on top, Sylvester Stallone voicing King Shark. Taika Waititi has also been cast in an undisclosed role.

The official plot synopsis from Warner Bros states: “Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment?  Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.”

From the looks of the trailer, we can already feel the major vibes from Gunn’s other franchise epic, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, with its Steely Dan soundtrack and reliance on quips to solidify the team’s hectic chemistry. There are a few glimpses of the film’s R-rating, including a bloody kill from King Shark, who is destined to become a fan-favorite character, especially with the fact that Stallone is voicing the character.

“The Suicide Squad” is slated to be released on August 6th, 2021, both in theaters and on HBOMax. Are you excited for this brand new spin on the Suicide Squad?
