‘Last Night in Soho’ Trailer: Lots of 1960s Nostalgia in Edgar Wright’s Time-Travel Horror

It seems as though many of us have been waiting an eternity to get a glimpse at Edgar Wright’s much anticipated stab at the horror genre. Today that excitement is rewarded with the teaser trailer. “Last Night in Soho” is Wright’s first feature film since “Baby Driver” and stars Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy in its title roles. Described as a psychological time-bending thriller with an ode to directors like Nicolas Roeg and Roman Polanski, Wright recreates his own version of 1960s London.

The story, written by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, follows Eloise, a passionate fan of fashion design who mysteriously enters the 1960s and encounters her idol, an extraordinary wannabe singer. There’s a good sense of how Wright is going to blur the two characters, with several reflecting scenes in various mirrors.

The 60s is also well and truly alive in the trailer as a billboard for “Thunderball is brought into shot, and others may notice posters for John Schlesinger’s “Darling or Freddie Francis’ “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors”. The glamour soon fades though as an ominous feeling takes over, signaling that there will be grave consequences to Eloise’s time-hopping adventures.

“Last Night in Soho” was originally planned to be released in September 2020, but COVID restrictions on cinemas have pushed it to October 2021. The delays have not affected Wright too much, and in an interview for IndieWire in January, he said that “I’d happily wait if there’s a chance to see it on the big screen, because that’s how it was made to be seen.” Wright has also been hard at work finishing and promoting his leap into documentaries with “The Sparks Brothers”.

This picture will feature an ensemble cast supporting McKenzie and Taylor-Joy, including Matt Smith, Rita Tushingham, Terrence Stamp and the late Diana Rigg. As a passionate horror fan, Wright knows there’s only one way to watch “Soho”, and that’s in a dark cinema. The finale of the trailer even features a nod to Polanski’s “Repulsion", as arms menacingly break through floors and windows.
