Sony and Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer for 'Spiderman: No Way Home' on Monday and sufficed to say, the internet is going nuts. After an apparent leak of surprise cameos and parts of the trailer earlier in the day, fans were curious as to when the official trailer would come. Fans have been itching for a multiverse in the MCU and ever since this film was announced, the anticipation for it has been more prevalent than possibly any other MCU film to date.

The trailer starts off with Peter (Tom Holland) dealing with the fallout of the previous film in which Mysterio frames him for his murder and exposes Peter's alter-ego. The world is against him and he finds himself dreading the spotlight on him. He goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks for help to make the world forget that he is Spiderman. Strange, who is surprisingly eager to help, crafts a spell but when Peter realizes the effects of this spell where his love, MJ (Zendaya), and his best friend, Ned,  will forget everything they have ever been through, he tampers with the spell by distracting Strange and thats when things go awry. The spell goes terribly wrong and that causes what seems to be an opening of the multiverse onto earth. What follows is a chaotic unfolding of the space time continuum and a flurry of sequences that teases several key characters. One such character introduced in the trailer is Alfred Molina's Doc Ock who first showed up in Sam Raimi's ‘Spiderman 2’ all the way back in 2004. He caps the trailer off with "Hello Peter"; two simple words which sent fans into a frenzy. Other characters hinted at are Electro, Sandman, and a menacing laugh followed by a shot of a pumpkin bomb that points to the return of Willem Defoe's Green Goblin.

What was missing from the trailer though was the inclusion of Sam Raimi's Spiderman in Tobey MacGuire and The Amazing Spiderman’s Andrew Garfield. Many hope to see the two reprise their roles in this film but no hint was given as to their possible appearance besides the obvious hints at villains from their respective franchises. The Spiderverse theories has been rampant on the internet for two years now and while there isn't any surprise appearances from the two in this trailer, there is still hope as this is just the first teaser released for the film. The MCU is also notorious for keeping secrets for their films so we may not see anything from the two until the film actually releases.

The world has been waiting for a taste of the newest Spiderman as theories have been spreading around the internet since before production of the film even started. It is clear that the hype for this movie is at an all time high for the MCU and one can hope it may just be what struggling movie theatres need to jumpstart the box office again. It remains to be seen if this will be a day and date release on Disney plus and in theatres but one thing is for sure, fans are as eager as ever to get answers. And although this teaser gives more questions than answers, there is no doubt it will be a hot topic come December.

“Spiderman: No Way Home” is directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Marisa Tomei, and is scheduled to release in theatres on December 17th, 2021.
