First 'Moon Knight' Trailer Shows Darker Side of MCU

The first look at the new character incorporates many horror elements never before seen in the MCU

The first trailer for the upcoming 'Moon Knight' series was released on Monday during the NFL Wildcard game and people are buzzing about the prospects of the titular character. After many teasers, the full trailer offers a better look at a character who seems to mark a new avenue for the MCU as they dive into a darker, more mature style of storytelling. Along with a trailer, a release date was announced for March 30th.

The trailer offers a first look at Oscar Isaac as he grapples with what is real and what is his dreams as he grapples with what he believes is Insomnia, but it turns out to be much more complex. Throughout the trailer, Isaac’s character ’Steven Grant’ (who is one of several personalities developed by the character) sees disturbing visions and struggles to make heads of what is going on as he discovers his true identity. We also get a glimpse of the Egyptian Moon God Khonsu, who is the one who gives the Moon Knight his superhuman abilities, in an eery sequence where Isaac is looking out an elevator and sees the God in all of its bird skull faced glory.

The character has yet to be brought to live action, but Moon Knight remains one of the more ‘niche’ yet popular characters in the Marvel cannon. Many fans feel the comic offers a more mature reading experience. Several iterations of the character have been in development for years, only for it to fall through. The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt. Not much else is revealed in the trailer as its main purpose was to show Oscar Isaac’s character struggling with his dissociative identity disorder and discovering secrets hidden in his own mind.

Besides Isaac, another notable actor makes an appearance in the trailer. Ethan Hawke plays the role of ‘Arthur Harrow’, a character who made an appearance in an early issue of Moon Knight, though it is believed that the character could be a combination of Moon Knight villains, most notably the 'Sun King’. The show is being developed by Justin Slater, most notably known for his work on films like ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Death Note’, and on television series such as ‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘The Exorcist’.

‘Moon Knight’ STARS Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke and is developed by Jeremy Slater AND IS SCHEDULED TO RELEASE on Disney Plus ON MARCH 30th, 2022.
