‘Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Trailer Delivers Laughs and Tears

Everyone’s Favourite Intergalactic gang of misfits are Back one Last Time

James Gunn may be running DC Studios but the writer/director/ film executive still has one final fun trick up his sleeve with dominant rival Marvel. That of course being the long in the works Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 which after some controversial missteps is finally coming to theatres to kick off next summer’s packed movie season. Disney today revealed the first trailer for the finale that sees Gunn writing and directing and bringing back original cast members Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Bradley Cooper. Making their MCU debuts are Maria Balakova and Will Poulter as the all powerful supervillain Adam Warlock.

This instalment finds Peter Quill aka Star Lord (Pratt) trying to rally his fellow teammates against the deadly Warlock in a battle that will have consequences for the Guardians. Although this particular franchise in this overall universe has been more quirky and comedy oriented and there is certainly some laugh out loud moments in the trailer that continue Gunn’s style of humor, it also has a more somber and dramatic tone compared to the trailers for its two predeccesors and the use of Spacehog’s In the Meantime is a drastic change from using Hooked on a Feeling and Fox on the Run.

The trailer also seems to have a significant focus on Rocket Racoon(voiced by Cooper) who has been a fan-favorite hinting that he will be a major factor in this new film. However, one of the significant reasons the previous two movies are among the most beloved in the MCU and its the focus on each of the team members giving their time to grow and shine on screen not to mention the comedic back and forth between each other.

It may seem crazy now given how unstoppable Marvel is but there was a time when Guardians of the Galaxy was considered a big gamble for the company as these were characters most people outside of the comic book world had never heard of but Gunn surprised moviegoers in 2014 with the first instalment and it grossed nearly $775 million worldwide and showing the industry that Marvel could thrive outside the core Avengers group. A sequel followed three years later and made over $860 million. Although Gunn was announced to return for this new film around the time of Vol. 2’s release, Disney ejected him after some controversial Tweets he made years earlier surfaced. Gunn jumped over to DC and directed last year’s The Suicide Squad yet during the production, he met with then Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn and his return was made official in March 2019.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is no doubt an important film for both Gunn and Marvel as it marks the end of a fruitful partnership that gave parties new opportunities that were thought unimaginable. At the same time, it also may hint at future paths for this universe to take in the years ahead. Anticipation has always been high and with marketing kicking in it will only get more excitement as the film hits theatres May 5, 2023
