'BAYMAX!' is Here to Help in New Trailer
Get ready to return to San Fransokyo! In honor of National Streaming Day, Disney+ has released a brand new trailer and key art for the new animated series BAYMAX! from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Baymax (Scott Adsit) first came onto the screen in the 2014 animated movie, Big Hero 6. The film focused on brothers Hiro (Ryan Potter) and Tadashi (Daniel Henney). Both are engineers and robotic prodigies, but Hiro has more interest in robot fighting than inventions. Tadashi is working on a healthcare robot, Baymax, at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. A fire breaks out at school when Tadashi and his classmates are at a presentation showcase. Tadashi ultimately dies trying to save his mentor.
Hiro clings to Baymax after the loss of his brother. Inadvertently, the two of them stumble upon evidence that may prove the fire at school was not an accident. While Baymax was originally designed by Tadashi to assist in healthcare related needs, Hiro must make some adjustments of his own to solve this mystery. Together with Tadashi’s friends, Hiro and Baymax must save San Fransokyo.
BAYMAX! continues after the events of Big Hero 6 and follows Baymax’s quest to do what he was programmed for: help people. No challenge is too big or too small for Baymax to handle. Twisted ankles, bad backs, or spilled ramen are all opportunities for Baymax to assist the good people of San Fransokyo…who may not even want his help. Just like the film before it, BAYMAX! proves that Baymax may have only been programmed to fix physical ailments, but is more than capable of healing emotional woes as well.
Adsit, voice of Baymax, is not the only returning cast member of Big Hero 6. Potter, voice of Hiro, and Maya Rudolph, who voiced Hiro and Tadashi’s aunt, will also be reprising their roles. New to the world of San Fransokyo are Emily Kuroda, Lilimar, Zeno Robinson and Jaboukie Young-White. Kuroda’s voice will be recognized by fans of the long-running Gilmore Girls and Young-White was last seen in Hulu’s runaway hit of last summer, Only Murders in the Building. Lilimar calls her voice role in Cleopatra in Space as her breakout. Robinson has a long list of voice acting credits that spans from English dubs of Japanese anime to video games and recent movies like The Mitchells vs the Machines.
Big Hero 6 was a huge success for Walt Disney Animation Studios and won an Oscar in 2015 for Best Animated Picture. It was directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, but only Hall returns as series creator for BAYMAX!’s six episode run. Cirocco Dunlap is screenwriter for the series. Her most recent work was on Netflix’s hit, Russian Doll, but Dunlap also has experience in children’s fare. She’s written for Waffles + Mochi and had a voice acting role in the classic James and the Giant Peach.
Many fans may not know, but BAYMAX! exists within the Marvel universe. The characters of Big Hero 6 were loosely inspired by a Marvel comic series of the same name. While Baymax may not look like the superheroes we’re used to seeing, he’s here to help in any way he can.
