‘Knives Out’ Sequel Gets a Teaser and a Title

Netflix is hyping up interest in Rian Johnson’s sequel to his smash hit film Knives Out A minimalistic teaser was recently released, reminding audiences who they can expect to see in this film. Additionally, the teaser dropped what this sequel will be called ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’. Fittingly, the teaser was augmented by the Beatles’ song “Glass Onion.”

For those of you who don’t remember, Knives Out was the much-lauded mystery thriller which Johnson wrote and directed as a send-up to the works of Agatha Christie. Starring Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas, the film followed an investigation into the death of elderly sleuth writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) where almost every member of his large family was a possible suspect in foul play. Craig was the bombastic detective Benoit Blanc, while de Armas was Thrombey’s nurse Marta. Given the film’s commercial and critical triumph, it stood to reason that a sequel would be made. In March 2021, Netflix acquired the rights to two sequels with an eye-popping bid of nearly $500 million.

As with the first film, Johnson has been tight-lipped about what this sequel will actually be about, but we know that de Armas is not returning. In keeping with the homages to Christie’s stories, this sequel will provide a new mystery for Benoit Blanc to solve. Glass Onion has the sleuth with a southern drawl journeying all the way to Greece in order to solve a new mystery, involving an entirely new list of suspects.

Speaking of those suspects, the film boasts an incredible cast to fill out the roles: Edward Norton (Birdman), Janelle Monae (Moonlight), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Dave Bautista (Dune), Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones), Kathryn Hahn (Wandavision), Leslie Odom Jr. (Smash), and Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks). As of now, we have no idea what sort of roles they’ll play, but given how the first one turned out, we can only imagine the fun they’ll have with Johnson’s writing and direction.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is scheduled for a late 2022 release. It remains to be seen whether Netflix will give it an extended theatrical release before putting it onto their streaming platform.
