‘Spaceballs’ Sequel Teases Next Chapter While Still Teasing Star Wars
The long awaited sequel (which we’ll still have to wait for until 2027) revealed a sneak peek at production, and couldn’t help prove the parody-force is still strong.
Today, Amazon MGM Studios announced that Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters; Little Shop of Horrors; Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise), Josh Gad (Frozen; Beauty and the Beast; The Wedding Ringer), Keke Palmer (Nope; One of Them Days), Lewis Pullman (The Testament of Ann Lee; Thunderbolts), Anthony Carrigan (Barry; Superman), George Wyner (A Serious Man; A Million Little Things), Daphne Zuniga (Melrose Place; One Tree Hill), and Bill Pullman (Independence Day; Lost Highway; The Sinner) are set to star in the studio’s new Spaceballs film, alongside previously previously announced star, Mel Brooks.
Moranis, Zuniga, Bill Pullman, Brooks, and Wyner will reprise their iconic roles in the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 MGM sci-fi parody that warped its way into cult comedy history, while Gad, Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Carrigan will take on brand-new characters whose identities are being kept tightly under wraps. Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) is directing from a script by writing duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy; TMNT: Mutant Mayhem), and Josh Gad. Plot details are being kept under lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield.
Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody are producing the film, alongside Mel Brooks, Josh Gad, Josh Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter. Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez will executive produce.
While the title and plot details are being kept under wraps, some of the reveals are exciting for fans of the Brooks’ film. Most notably Lewis Pullman joining his father in the franchise, which undoubtedly means we’re getting the next generation of Lonestar rogues to take us on an adventure this time. The additions of Palmer, Gad and noted character favorite Carrigan rounds out the cast, bringing in new comedic blood who have proven themselves time and time again. While nothing specific is known about their roles, the draw of having some of the original cast with comedians from this generation could make Spaceballs 2 quite the draw.
The production has also proved that they haven’t missed a beat, using this photo not only to tease audiences, but continue to spoof the franchise that gave it life so many decades ago. The positioning of the chairs, the black and white photography, and some of the plots strewn about in the background are a pitch perfect parody of the table reading photo released by Lucasfilm and Disney when The Force Awakens had started production. Naturally, Spaceballs has some hidden easter eggs of comedy in the photo, such as a cooler in a crate replacing the iconic R2D2 in the original.
