Return to the Games: Haymitch's Brutal Origin Revealed in First 'Sunrise on the Reaping' Trailer

Everything We Know About the 50th Hunger Games, the Star-Studded Cast, and some of the changes the trailer has made.

The official trailer for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ introduces a young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) as he is reaped for the 50th Hunger Games, a Second Quarter Quell featuring twice the number of tributes. The footage highlights a deceptively beautiful, lush, and sun-drenched arena that hides lethal dangers, including a looming volcano. Key sequences tease high-stakes action with teenagers wielding axes, over-the-top Capitol fashion, and first looks at a younger President Snow (Ralph Fiennes), a young Effie Trinket (Elle Fanning), and Caesar Flickerman (Kieran Culkin). The trailer, which dropped on April 13, 2026, emphasizes the Capitol’s brutal propaganda machine and concludes with an ominous voiceover from Woody Harrelson’s older Haymitch: “I think these games are going to be different”.

The cast for Sunrise on the Reaping is a powerhouse mix of rising talent and Hollywood legends, led by Joseph Zada as the sharp-witted young Haymitch Abernathy. He is joined by Mckenna Grace as his District 12 ally Maysilee Donner, while Whitney Peak takes on the role of Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. The Capitol’s influence is represented by a formidable ensemble: Ralph Fiennes portrays a middle-aged, calculating President Snow, and Kieran Culkin brings his signature charisma to a younger Caesar Flickerman. Adding further depth to the prequel’s world are Elle Fanning as the image-obsessed Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as the aspiring filmmaker Plutarch Heavensbee, and Glenn Close as the formidable new District 12 escort, Drusilla Sickle.

Fans have already noticed quite a few differences between the style of the trailer, and the novel. The trailer introduces several visual and narrative shifts from the source text, particularly regarding character aesthetics and the scale of early propaganda efforts. Haymitch is described with the "Seam" features typical of District 12—dark hair and grey eyes in the novel, but the trailer portrays Zada with blonde hair and blue eyes, traditionally associated with the wealthier merchant section. This is likely a change made for cinematic continuity with Harrelson having the same fair look that Zada will have.

Hair color was a major area of contention apparently, as the trailer also shows a younger Caesar Flickerman with brown hair, marking an evolution toward the colorful Capitol styles seen in later films. In the book, he is described as already having his signature green hair. Considering how central image is in these films, not only for the characters themselves, but for the aesthetic of the films, it’s no wonder people are noticing these difference. Another notable difference surrounded the Tributes. In the trailer they wear distinctive white ponchos and pants with district-colored shirts and trim, a departure from the text where district colors were more prominent. A small change, but considering the games are supposed to be as big and colorful as the y are, it’s a wonder why they change anything from the Suzanne Collins source material.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX in North America on November 20, 2026.
