To Me, My X-Men: 'X-Men '97' Trailer Unveils More Nostalgic 90s Chaos
The mutant team confronts En Sabah Nur across past, present, and future timelines, all while making the 90’s the center of the universe once again.
Marvel Animation’s Emmy®-nominated series ‘X-Men ’97’ returns to Disney+ for a second season on July 1. A trailer and poster are available now to download and share. The first season of X-Men ‘97 is one of the most-watched Disney+ Original animated series, and a hit with fans and critics alike. It is currently “Certified Fresh” with a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes as of today.
X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence. The new footage confirms that the sophomore season will dive headfirst into a time-bending war possibly inspired by the iconic comic book storyline, "Age of Apocalypse."
Season 2 seemingly sets up a high-stakes, time-bending war following the catastrophic events of the Season 1 finale. The X-Men find themselves completely fractured, displaced, and stranded across different eras of history. While some team members are trapped in ancient Egypt during the rise of En Sabah Nur, (better known as Apocalypse), others are flung thousands of years into a dystopian future. Back in the 1990s, mutant intolerance continues to fester in their absence, forcing Forge and Bishop to launch a desperate, time-travel rescue mission to reassemble the team and repair the fractured timeline.
Standing in their way is the ancient and powerful villain Apocalypse, who serves as the central antagonist of the season in a storyline heavily inspired by the iconic "Age of Apocalypse" comic book arc. The trailer showcases Apocalypse targeting the vulnerable X-Men across multiple timelines, aiming to rewrite history in his own image. Meanwhile, the surviving heroes face deeply personal battles. Rogue is still reeling from the devastating loss of Gambit, while Wolverine is shown adapting to life without his adamantium skeleton following his brutal clash with Magneto. This vulnerability makes Logan a prime target for returning Weapon X rivals like Sabretooth and Lady Deathstrike, which leaked footage actually teased at one point.
To combat these threats and fix history, the trailer reveals the exciting debut of two legendary comic book offshoot teams: X-Force and X-Factor. Viewers get a first look at Cable leading an aggressive X-Force lineup featuring Archangel, Psylocke, Sunspot, and Jubilee, while X-Factor introduces Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, and Multiple Man. Packed with massive action sequences, the footage highlights Storm unleashing devastating elemental power, Morph shapeshifting into Marvel icons like Deadpool, and a brief appearance by Nathaniel Richards (Rama-Tut), promising an epic, multiversial continuation of the animated saga.
The second season of the original animated series features 9 episodes, and the voice cast includes Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast. The series is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo. The supervising producer is Jake Castorena. Episodes written by JB Ballard, Beau DeMayo, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson. The episodic directors are Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley.
