“Death on the Nile” is a sequel to the 2017 mystery-thriller film “Murder on the Orient Express” and will see the return of Branagh as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The film will follow Poirot, now a world-renowned detective, finding himself thrust into a murder investigation onboard a steamboat traversing the Nile River while on a vacation in Egypt.

The film is an adaptation of the hit 1937 novel of the same name by murder-mystery icon Agatha Christie. 2020’s “Death on the Nile” will be the third film version of the novel, after a 1978 theatrically-released adaptation and a 2004 made-for-television movie on PBS.

Aside from starring Kenneth Branagh, “Death on the Nile” will feature Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer and Letitia Wright, as mere highlights of another all star cast. The movie also has some serious Hollywood heavyweights behind it, as Ridley Scott, Mark Gordon, Simon Kinberg, Judy Hofflund, and Kevin J. Walsh are attached as producers.

Branagh has made comments in the past teasing the possibility of making a cinematic universe of Agatha Christie adaptations starring his Poirot character, citing the combined 66 books and short stories of the Poirot canon from Christie. If this film performs well at the box office, we can most likely expect to see Branagh return with more Poirot in the near future.

“Death on the Nile” is on track for a theatrical release from Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Studios for October 23, 2020. Check out the trailer below:
