Sofia Coppola's Latest Film "On The Rocks" Trailer Gives Us An Inside Look into a Father-Daughter Relationship
It’s here – the long-awaited trailer for Sofia Coppola’s next feature film “On The Rocks” has debuted on Apple+ prior to its October 2020 release date.
The trailer depicts Rashida Jones and Bill Murray as father and daughter duo, reuniting in New York City after what we can presume are a few years apart. In trailer we see Rashida Jones as Laura, a middle-aged mother, and her relationship with her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans). While Laura stays at home to take care of her two daughters, she begins to fixate upon her husband’s constant business trips that take him away from the family.
As their continuous separation begins to take a toll on their relationship, Laura turns to her larger than life father, Felix, (Bill Murray) for some much-needed advice. As she spends more time with her father, his critical view of the world begins to seep into Laura’s unconsciousness as she becomes filled with even more unease about her marriage.
What starts out as a lunch meeting turns into a quest to follow Laura’s husband to find any evidence of his unfaithfulness in their marriage. Set against the backdrop of New York City, the “On The Rocks” trailer gives a sweet sentiment about our pre-quarantine world.
“On The Rocks” is Coppola’s first film in three years after “The Beguiled” which premiered in 2017. Coppola’s latest film also marks the second feature film that Coppola and Murray have worked together on, following their 2003 team up on “Lost In Translation” that landed Coppola a Best Original Screenplay win at the Academy Awards that year along with Best Picture and Best Actor nominations.
Father and daughter relationships continue to make appearances in Coppola’s work over the years and we have seen similar themes and threads of these workings, specifically in her 2010 movie “Somewhere.” The movie is described as a Comedy-Drama that explores the relationships between father and daughter and discoveries between husband and wife.
“On The Rocks” was created with A24 Films and will be distributed by Apple+ in October 2020.
