‘Triple Frontier’ Director in Talks to Direct ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Solo Film for Sony

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is considering filmmaker J.C. Chandor to direct their upcoming “Kraven the Hunter” solo film for the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC).

Chandor is best known for being the writer and director of the action thriller “Triple Frontier” which premiered on Netflix in early 2019 and starred the likes of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal. Chandor is also known for being a nominee for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his drama thriller “Margin Call” starring Kevin Spacey, which was also his directorial debut.

The script has already been penned by Richard Wenk, writer of such films as “The Expendables 2,” “The Equalizer,” “The Equalizer 2,” “The Magnificent Seven,” and “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.” Amy Pascal will be an executive producer on the film, and Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad will be producers.

This marks the second piece of Sony Marvel news in the last 24 hours, since yesterday’s announcement of Olivia Wilde directing the presumed solo “Spider-Woman” movie.

Fans of Spider-Man will remember that Kraven (aka Sergei Kravinoff) in the comics is one of the Wall-Crawler’s most formidable foes. Kraven is a big game hunter empowered with above-average physicality from a mystical African potion obsessed with hunting the most dangerous game on each continent.

While he is often portrayed as a villain in the comics, Kraven has appeared as an antihero, which will most likely be the capacity in which we see him in this solo film if “Venom” and “Morbius” are any indication.

The third “Spider-Man” movie will begin filming this winter for a December 2021 release, thus completing Tom Holland’s last solo movie before returning contractually to Sony as the Web-Slinger. Fans everywhere are now wondering if we will then see the SUMC’s Kraven hunt Holland’s Spider-Man and fulfill his comic book destiny.

“Kraven the Hunter” is expected to enter production next year for a 2022 or 2023 release.
