LeBron James takes on the leading role of a basketball legend fighting a new lineup of animated villains as a sequel to the '90s classic.

Warner Bros. Pictures debuted the first trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy” on Saturday and, suffice it to say, it's a lot to unpack. All the old classic characters return with a new lead in LeBron James that carries on the mantle left by Michael Jordan in the first “Space Jam”. It has been a long time coming for a follow up to the 1996 cult classic, and fans have finally gotten what they asked for - and possibly more - as the film adds new characters. “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is set to premiere in theaters on July 16th, 2021, with a simultaneous release on HBO Max.

The story seems to follow LeBron trying to navigate what is being called the 'ServerVerse' after his son, Dom (Cedric Joe) tells LeBron he doesn't want to follow in his father's footsteps to play basketball. While in an elevator, they arrive at a server room and Dom gets pulled into the computer program while walking away from his father. LeBron must then go in and take on the algorithm named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle) in a game of basketball to get his son back. He then goes to Tune World, where he meets all the classic characters and tries to form a super team to take on the computer.

Alongside the classic Looney Tunes characters, we also get a boatload of other classic Warner Bros' characters in the trailer as it is presumed that the server LeBron and his son are stuck in is at the company’s studio. We see many iconic characters including King Kong, The Flintstones, The Iron Giant, Pennywise and more populate this world.

Also announced alongside the trailer is that Zendaya will be providing the voice of Lola Bunny. She has been on a hot streak since her Disney days, most recently delivering a heartwrenching performance in “Malcolm & Marie”. She will be voicing one of the more iconic characters in the Looney Tunes universe. After that, she is set to appear in two massive blockbusters, “Dune” and “Spiderman: No Way Home”.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” also includes popular basketball players Damian Lillard, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, and Diana Taurasi. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee (“Girls Trip”, “Night School”) and produced by Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”, “Creed”), the cast rounds out with Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, Jeff Bergman and Eric Bauza. The trailer is already causing a lot of buzz on the internet, with people comparing it to the likes of “Ready Player One” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. Not everybody will be pleased when a sequel to a classic film is made, but Warner Bros. seem to have crafted an all star team for the job!

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” stars LeBron James, Zendaya, and Don Cheadle, and releases in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16th, 2021. Are you excited for the “Space Jam” sequel? Check out the trailer and let us know in the comments down below!
