Universal Pictures released the first trailer for “Dear Evan Hansen” on Tuesday. The film adaptation of the hit stage show will follow the titular Evan Hansen (Ben Platt reprising his Tony-winning role). Evan is a high school student who lives with social anxiety: through no fault of his own, he is thrown into a difficult situation after the suicide of a classmate, an event which teaches him more about himself than he expected. The musical opened in December 2016 on Broadway, with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and libretto by Steven Levenson. The musical was a hit not only for its production values, but for its hard look at suicide and mental health.

Joining Platt will be Oscar winner Julianne Moore, who plays Evan’s mother Heidi. Relative newcomer Colton Ryan will play the role of Connor Murphy, with Danny Pino and Oscar nominee Amy Adams set to play Connor’s parents. The film is a notable addition to Stephen Chbosky’s filmography as a director. Chbosky is best known for writing and directing “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower” and “Wonder”. Platt, now 27, is notably reprising the title role years after originating it, which may make it difficult to credibly view him as a teenager.

“Dear Evan Hansen” will join this year’s already packed musical line up that includes films such as “In the Heights”, “West Side Story”, “Vivo”, and Disney’s “Encanto”. Universal Pictures hopes the film will stand out from the rest of the field, with the film’s focus on sparking a similar conversation about mental health that its stage version did.

“Dear Evan Hansen” is directed by Steven Chbosky and stars Ben Platt, Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Colton Ryan, and Amy Adams, and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 24th, 2021.
