Kevin Smith’s 'Masters of the Universe: Revelation' Gives A Taste Of What's To Come In The New Eternia
The revamp of the 80’s classic cartoon seemingly has THE POWER.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith has never hidden his love of pop culture, incorporating it into his own films with varied success. Fans have grown accustomed to seeing blatant references to Batman and Star Wars in Smith’s filmography, they’ve seen episodes of Supergirl which he directed, or maybe they’ve heard Smith’s anecdotes about that one time he wrote a Superman screenplay for Jon Peters. But now, Smith has turned his eye to a different franchise from the 1980s.
Whether you were introduced to Masters of the Universe via the classic 80’s cartoon, the She-Ra sequel series, the comic books, or even the live-action film, the impact of this franchise upon Western culture is impossible to doubt. This was proven once again when She-Ra and the Princesses of Power debuted in 2018, running for five seasons and receiving widespread acclaim. Now, audiences will soon be introduced to Masters of the Universe: Revelation, with Smith as its showrunner.
According to Smith himself, Revelation will pick up where the original 80s show left off. But while it will continue the old narrative, Smith made it clear that there will be updates and tweaks throughout. The story and artwork will also pay tribute to the extensive toy lines associated with the franchise, as you can see with the first released stills from the show.
As is par for the course, Smith’s approach to the franchise comes from a loving place: “I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric. So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise.”
Of course, it is also worth pointing out that this production’s cast and crew, in true Kevin Smith style, is full of names which would prompt a standing ovation at any self-respecting comic con. Revelation boasts a score composed by Bear McCreary (Black Sails, The Walking Dead), and a voice cast which includes Phil Lamarr (Futurama, Samurai Jack), Kevin Conroy, (Batman: The Animated Series), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Game of Thrones), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Susan Eisenberg (Justice League), Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: TAS), and Smith’s long-time friend and collaborator Jason Mewes.
If nothing else, this certainly proves Smith’s point about the lasting impact of Masters of the Universe, and we can’t wait to see this revamped take on the world of Eternia!
