Celebrate May the Fourth with First Look at the 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Trailer

Disney celebrates May the Fourth by releasing a new trailer for their upcoming Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. This trailer is Star Wars fans’ first real look at the highly-anticipated return of Ewan MacGregor’s fan favorite character.

Obi-Wan was first introduced in the Original Trilogy as a hermit on Tattooine. He was played by famed British actor Alec Guinness and acted as a guide of sorts to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Obi-Wan is integral to the journey of Luke. Not only did Obi-Wan give Luke his first lightsaber and inform him of his Jedi destiny, but Obi-Wan also trained Luke’s father.

Obi-Wan Kenobi the series takes place 10 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. This film was the last in the Prequel Trilogy and saw Anakin Skywalker begin his transformation into Darth Vader. Little is known about the specifics of the series, but it appears to begin with Obi-Wan’s attempts to watch over Luke as he comes of age on Tattoine.

In the new trailer, fans are given their first look at Kumail Nanjiani, Moses Ingram, and Joel Edgerton in their roles. Edgerton plays Owen Lars, the moisture farmer step-uncle of Luke who doesn’t want Obi-Wan to train Luke to be a Jedi. Owen’s wife is Beru Whitesun Lars (Bonnie Piesse) and this series gives fans a look at their lives before their demise in the original Star Wars at the hands of Imperial Stormtroopers. Nanjiani’s role is still undisclosed and given his blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse in the trailer, it looks like Disney wants to keep his character top secret.

Ingram plays Reva/the Third Sister, an Inquisitor. Reva is a former Jedi who turned to the Dark Side. She’s been tasked with hunting down the remaining Jedis as part of the Great Jedi Purge. Obi-Wan Kenobi creator, Joby Harold, promises that Reva’s role in the series will be one of the great villains of the Star Wars canon. Ingram was most recently seen on the big screen in Michael Bay’s latest, Ambulance.

Perhaps most exciting of all is the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. It was the hateful comments from Star Wars fans after Christensen’s performance in the Prequel Trilogy that led to him taking a decade-long break from acting. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is not Christensen’s first return to the world of Star Wars. He provided a voiceover cameo in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The trailer ends with Vader’s signature mechanical breathing and it seems a reunion between former Jedi Master and Padawan is inevitable.

Fans are hoping to see the lasting effects of how Anakin’s shift to the Dark Side impacted Obi-Wan. This series will also mark the first time the Inquisitors will be seen in a live-action series or movie. They debuted in the animated series Star Wars Rebels and have already made a villainous name for themselves in Star Wars video games and comics.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will exclusively stream on Disney+ starting Friday, May 27th with a two-episode premiere. The series will then shift to weekly episodes on Wednesdays until the finale on June 22nd.
