James Cameron's 'Avatar: The Way Of Water' Makes A Splash With Brand New Teaser Trailer

Thirteen years after the release of James Cameron’s universally-acclaimed cinematic event Avatar, the blockbuster filmmaker is back with the first of four planned sequels in the fantastical world of Pandora. The original film has become famous for its innovative filmmaking and record-breaking Box Office performance, which leave it to be considered one of the defining films of this generation.

With Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington both reprising their roles as Neytiri and Jake Sully respectively, the film will follow their family more than a decade after the previous film’s conclusion, as they attempt to keep each other safe from the tragedies and dangers that await them in the faraway world of Pandora. The film will also see the return of Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Joel David Moore in their original roles.

Outside of the original cast, The Way Of Water also promises plenty of new and exciting additions to the ensemble - including Jemaine Clement, Kate Winslet, and Edie Falco. Although little has been revealed about their roles in the story, it seems likely that they’ll play a large role in the development of the protagonists’ complicated journeys.

On the technical side, The Way Of Water seems to have departed fairly drastically from its original team. Although Cameron returns as director, writer, and producer, he’s joined in the writers’ room by Josh Friedman, who previously worked on Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi blockbuster War Of The Worlds. In lieu of composer James Horner is Simon Franglen, whose most notable credits include The Magnificent Seven and Voyage of Time. And finally, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Mauro Fiore has been replaced by James Cameron’s long-time collaborator Russell Carpenter, with whom he worked on Titanic and True Lies.

The film’s first images display the same bold colors and distinctive visuals as the previous installment, with plenty of intense-looking action sequences and breathtaking landscape shots. Much of Cameron’s style seems to remain the same - whether that’s the sweeping storytelling or the intimate focus on family and humanity, The Way Of Water seems to fit neatly into the Avatar universe. Those who were worried that Cameron’s sequel wouldn't be able to recapture the magic of Pandora can already put their minds to rest.

The Way Of Water’s teaser trailer and promotional material seems to be focusing once again on the conflict between humans and the Na’vi, exploring how the two can live in harmony with each other without any one race asserting power over the other. It promises to be an extremely intense and exciting story, and despite worries that too much time has passed since the first installment, it seems that James Cameron has a clear and distinct vision for this iconic franchise.
