Marvel Studios' Ironheart Debuts New Trailer
The continuing adventures of riri williams are right around the corner…
After years of anticipation, Marvel Studios’ Ironheart is signaling its release being around the corner, thanks to another new trailer.
Riri Williams is one of the more recent additions to both the Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe, making her comics debut in a 2016 issue of Invincible Iron Man, and her on-screen debut in a supporting role in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Dominique Thorne (Wakanda Forever, Freaky Tales) reprises her role as Riri/Ironheart, now getting to flesh out the character in a 6 episode series. This latest trailer hammers home the more personal and intimate approach the series promises to take with Riri Williams, expanding on the more action-oriented appearance of the character in Wakanda Forever. This more grounded, city-based approach to Ironheart, as teased by both this new trailer and previous trailers aligns more with the character’s portrayal in Eve Ewing’s takes on the character in the comics.
Teased more heavily in this trailer is the narrative element of some sort of magic. In the Marvel Universe, the concepts of magic have been explored in many different ways varying from project to project, with the likes of the Doctor Strange films focusing on a more mystic and cosmic approach, apropos to the more witch-like use in Agatha All Along, for instance. A brief scene in the trailer sees a sort of red magic pattern arise, and engulf what seems to be a new Ironheart suit, making good on the ‘tech vs magic’ element that Marvel head Kevin Feige promised when unveiling the series at 2022’s D23 Expo. While on the magic front, we also see more of Anthony Ramos (In The Heights, Twisters) as Parker Robbins, also known as the villain called The Hood, a prominent street-level villain in Marvel Comics whose powers come from dark magic.
Further teased is the role of actress Lyric Ross (The Is Us) as some sort of personified artificial intelligence. Like her fellow ‘Iron’ counterpart, it seems that Riri Williams will be assisted by some sort of AI to deal with her tech related issues. Also further teased is the role of Alden Ehrenreich, (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Oppenheimer) who seems to be a sort of ally that Williams will confide in during the series.
Ironheart is the third series to be released after Marvel Studios’ ‘creative overhaul’ period, which has seen a renewed focus on a ‘quality over quantity’ approach, with a staggered number of film and TV releases per year compared to the earlier years of Marvel this decade. Both previous live-action series released after the MCU’s overhaul of sorts fared positively, with both Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again faring well critically and amongst fans.
Ironheart in of itself has seen a great deal of overhaul and deliberation during its road to eventual release. The series was first announced in 2020 during Marvel Studios’ presentation at Disney’s Investors Day livestream. The series started filming more than three years ago, during May of 2022, and had apparently wrapped before Ironheart’s debut in Wakanda Forever.
Chinaka Hodge (The Midnight Club, Snowpiercer) serves as the series’ head writer. Hodges has a background in poetry and writing for theatre, having tackled themes of identity and gentrification in the past, both of which align with Ironheart’s comic stories, and will likely translate into the upcoming TV adaptation.
