'TRON: Ares' Releases New Trailer, Soundtrack Details
The Long-awaited return to the world of tron inches closer
It has been over a decade since audiences last had the chance to see a Tron film in cinemas. 2011’s Tron: Legacy marked the first return to the franchise, originally spawned its 1982 namesake. Now, after much post-Legacy deliberation, Disney’s iconic ‘game-to-life’ franchise respawns in the form of Tron: Ares, which has released its new trailer and other information pertaining to the new film’s sonic identity.
Ares is set some time after the events of Tron: Legacy, and tells a new tangential story in the Tron franchise. Ares’ new trailer divulges more of the film’s central plotline, with the main event being that some sort of incursion has allowed the Tron video-game world of The Grid to move into the real world, with Jared Leto as the titular Ares, a new kind of soldier from The Grid, sporting the signature Tron light-bikes, but in a new, red colour scheme for the light emission. Ares seems to be in leagues with Julian Dillinger, (Evan Peters) a presumable relative of original series villain Edward Dillinger. The trailer features much intrigue as to Leto’s overall role in the story, as well as glimpses at some action sequences featuring Ares on his light-bike in confrontation with law enforcement agencies.
Also featured in the trailer are the likes of Greta Lee, (Past Lives, The Morning Show) Jodie Turner-Smith (Bad Monkey, The Agency) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, Sex Education) as well as a brief experience from franchise mainstay Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as Kevin Flynn in a hologram capacity. Also set to appear are Cameron Monaghan (Star Wars: Jedi series) and comedian Hasan Minhaj.
While the initial follow-up to Legacy was expected to helmed by Joseph Kosinski, it is clear that Ares is very much its own thing, and not a direct sequel to Legacy. Ares was directed by Disney stalwart Joachim Rønning (Young Woman and the Sea, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), with the script credited to writer Jesse Wigutow (Daredevil: Born Again). The new creatives look to be bringing a new take to the world, with little visual emphasis on the existing world of The Grid, in the new trailer at least.
One of the main reasons that Tron: Legacy has had an enduring legacy is due to the new, highly digital, techno aesthetic brought to the film by Daft Punk, an already beloved musical act who fit the franchise like a glove, bringing an iconic new sonic identity to the franchise that remains popular. While Daft Punk are not returning to the Tron world, another iconic music group have joined Ares in the form of Nine Inch Nails. Comprised of Oscar nominated composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Challengers, Soul), Nine Inch Nails made a name for themselves in the electronic rock space, and became renowned for their unique musicality. Tron: Ares marks the first time that the duo have donned their Nine Inch Nails moniker while scoring a film, and their involvement has been a big push in the marketing for the film. Audiences can expect another iconic score from these iconic musicians with Tron: Ares.
