By the Power of Greyskull! Amazon Brings the Power in First Full 'Masters of the Universe' Trailer
Eternia is calling you home.
In ‘Masters of the Universe’, director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man - the most powerful man in the universe.
Following the astounding global success of ‘Barbie’, Masters of the Universe marks Mattel Studios’ next feature film in its growing slate of brand-led entertainment. He-Man has existed across cartoons, toys, comics, and films, making it a shared reference point for multi-generational fans. This is a film that all generations of audiences can enjoy in a new, live-action adventure movie based on Mattel’s classic 80’s toy brand. Masters promises to deliver breathtaking visuals, heart-pounding action, and exhilarating fun, and the trailer certainly brings that. Already in a limited trailer, there appears to be epic action and visual effects that just have to be seen on the big screen. This movie will deliver the nostalgia that fans remember. Masters has a long legacy and heritage that has been captivating fans for over forty years, but Amazon has said that even moviegoers who didn’t grow up with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe world will love the film for its action, spectacle, and stellar world-building effects.
Fan reactions to the both trailers so far have been a mix of high-octane nostalgia and modern skepticism. Many longtime fans have been instantly won over by the visual scale and the faithful yet updated aesthetic provided by Knight. Highlights that sparked major excitement included the "I have the power" transformation, the sweeping vistas of Eternia, and a clever Easter egg where Battle Cat replaced the classic MGM lion in the studio logo. However, the casting of Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and Jared Leto as Skeletor remains a point of contention. While some viewers found Leto's menacing voice portrayal a pleasant surprise, others expressed disappointment that Galitzine's physique didn't match the "inhumanly large" proportions of the original 1980s action figures. This sparked a debate between those who appreciate a more grounded, character-driven approach and those who wanted a hyper-stylized look closer to the source material.
Any property that is as beloved as Masters of the Universe is bound to create division when it comes to adaptations. Kevin Smith’s recent Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution certainly got their share of unfair vitriol spat their way. Many fans noted a vibrant, action-heavy tone reminiscent of Thor: Ragnarok or Guardians of the Galaxy, though some critics worried the film might feel too much like a "safe" modern blockbuster. Though it seems that positivity will win out, as this second trailer trailer has so far, been generally better received than the first teaser, with fans praising the faster sword-fight choreography and the inclusion of iconic characters like Idris Elba's Man-at-Arms, as well as hardcore Eternia fans thrilling over lore-specific details like Snake Mountain, the Towers of Eternia, and a Vikor-inspired statue in the background of a comic book shop.
