Red Takes on Fatherhood in First Trailer for 'Angry Birds 3'
The birds are back for level three.
Seven years after Angry Birds 2, the last entry in the series, Paramount Pictures and Rovio Entertainment are ready to slingshot a new Angry Birds adventure to our screens this holiday season with the release of the first poster and trailer.
In this new outing from the titular irate avians, the grumpy but lovable Red must face his greatest challenge yet. No, not just the requisite green pigs this time. Now, Red must deal with the hurdles of fatherhood. The new trailer opens with shots of Red’s best angry moments before teasing his greatest challenge yet. Small glimpses of a new challenger hit us until the full reveal hits us: Red’s kids. We see Red dropping his oldest son off at school, who says the comical names of some bird-named celebrities in this universe (although ‘Ryan Gosling’ is particularly funny). Red struggles to connect with his older son and daughter and then must contend with his mischievous baby, who gets into some slapstick antics with sharp objects in the kitchen. Calling in his friends Chuck and Bomb (played by Josh Gad and Danny McBride, respectively), who struggle with diaper duty while Red tries to get some work done. The trailer ends with the baby getting buzzed off of some soda as Chuck and Bomb are forced to contend with the hyper baby as Red slinks slyly back into his room.
The Angry Birds series first gained cultural prominence as one of the first breakout video games exclusively made for mobile phones. In the game, players must slingshot a variety of birds (each one with varying abilities) at a series of fortresses constructed by an evil group of green pigs. The player must defeat each pig enemy before they run out of birds to shoot. A simple game at its core, it reached an unparalleled level of success, largely due to its simplistic nature, which allowed an audience of all ages and skill levels to easily pick up and play. Combine that with a low starting price of ¢99 when the game originally dropped in 2009, and it had all the makings for a massive success.
The initial smash hit was followed by several sequels and spinoffs such as Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Rio and huge franchise crossovers like Angry Birds Star Wars. But the series saw its biggest leap when, in 2016, a theatrical adaptation of the series was released. Despite receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics, it was a massive success for Rovio and its distributor, Sony Pictures. A sequel followed in 2019, which was reviewed significantly better by critics, but also saw a sharp drop in its box office takings. Time will tell if this new entry in the series will match either the box office draw of the first or the critical reaction of the second. But this new threequel has all the makings of a great entry in the series for fans and families alike!
Angry Birds 3 releases on December 23rd and stars Jason Sudeikis as Red, Josh Gad as Chuck, Danny McBride as Bomb, Rachel Bloom as Silver, Emma Meyers as June and Psalm West as the baby Olly.
