'Godzilla vs. Kong' Trailer Hypes Up the Biggest Showdown of 2021

The gloves are off in the first trailer for Adam Wingard’s climactic MonsterVerse epic

After much negotiating and deliberation, Legendary and Warner Bros. have finally come to an agreement and locked down a date for their titanic throw down between the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World. While that’s technically speaking “old news,” the arrival of the first official trailer for “Godzilla vs. Kong” only cements the fact that audiences will in fact be treated to the highly anticipated cinematic pay-per-view event of the year this March and boy is it shaping up to be glorious.

First announced over five years ago, “Godzilla vs. Kong” marks the culmination of Legendary’s MonsterVerse that began back in 2014 with Gareth Edward’s “Godzilla.” Though divisive upon release for its ground-level “Jaws” like approach to monster mayhem, the film grossed $529 million at the box office spawning a sequel and universe connecting King Kong film. In 2017, Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ “Kong: Skull Island” gave us pure eye candy with his psychedelic Vietnam War-era adventure flick following a group of Monarch (MonsterVerse’s secret government agency) Scientists who travel to a mysterious island in the Pacific only to square off with Kong and other foes. A post-credits scene teased the arrival of Toho legends King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra who would all eventually level Boston with Godzilla in 2019 with Michael Dougherty’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.”

Now, either crazed with power or pissed off at human incompetence, Godzilla’s on the warpath, and humanity’s only hope is to recruit Kong, who’s grown exponentially in size since the 70s, to battle for supremacy over our fragile little planet.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” stars Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobbie-Brown, Kyle Chandler, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza González, Lance Reddick, Julian Dennison, Demián Bichir, Shun Oguri, and Jessica Henwick, and Zhang Ziyi.

This fight night hype reel of a trailer delivers all the goods; the Tokyo skyline engulfed by a sea of neon lights and rain, Kong evading Godzilla’s atomic breath by jumping off an aircraft carrier, bombs, explosions, Rebecca Hall’s Aragorn-esque line, “Kong bows to no one,” WWE’s Hell in a Cell theme song “Here We Go” by Chris Classic, and, in case your adrenaline isn’t pumping yet, Kong leaping towards Godzilla wielding a God damn battle axe. It’s loud, it’s vibrant, it’s utterly bananas, and is sure to have audiences positively amped for March 26.

There are only two months left until fight night, so make sure to reserve your seats either at home on HBO Max or at the theater. Check out the synopsis and epic trailer below.

In a new world where man and monster now coexist, Monarch must lead the way to a prosperous future alongside the Titans, keeping humanity in check. However, rival factions that want to manipulate the Titans for war begin to rise under the guise of a nefarious conspiracy, threatening to wipe out all life on the planet. Meanwhile, on Skull Island, strange seismic activity draws the attention of Godzilla and Kong alike.
