FIRST ‘Snyder Cut’ Trailer Released: ‘Zack Snyder's Justice League’ DC FanDome Panel Recap
The first official trailer for “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” colloquially known as The Snyder Cut, has been released during the “Snyder Cut” panel at DC FanDome on Saturday.
The trailer provides plenty of new scenes and fresh content not included in the 2017 theatrical cut of the film, as well as some familiar scenes edited to accommodate Zack Snyder’s original unique style and cinematography.
From the beginning, we finally get to see our first official look at Darkseid, who is rumored to play a substantial role in the film as the grand puppetmaster behind Steppenwolf. Based on the trailer, it appears we will first see him in the flashback sequence during his original attempt at conquering the Earth 5,000 years ago. While this sequence was included in the theatrical cut, it seems Darkseid’s presence had been removed.
We then get to see our first in-universe naming of the titular team when we see a gate branded with “Justice League” in the destruction occurring in a vision from the Knightmare future, originally seen in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
From there, we see more new footage, some of which was seen in the original 2016 Comic-Con trailer. This includes shots of pre-Cyborg Victor Stone playing football for Gotham High, and the infamous black-suited Superman originally teased on Zack Snyder’s Instagram back in 2016.
We get our first look at the DCEU Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) when she is saved from a horrific car crash by none other than Barry Allen, who uses his super-speed to remove her from the wreckage. Clemons’ scenes were removed from the theatrical cut of the film.
Later on, we see Barry presumably entering the Speed Force for the first time on screen, potentially setting up the introduction of the DC Multiverse for his future solo film.
Steppenwolf now sports his official new look, with several upgrades from his original theatrical version. Here, we see his face has narrower, sharper, and more defined features with noticeably better CGI. His armor also sports a series of sharp metallic spikes all over that was previously unseen in his theatrical costume and gives him a deadlier and more nefarious look.
Nearing the end, we see some familiar scenes from the theatrical version, but without the light color grading. During what we see of the final battle scenes, we can see they now retain their original Snyder-esque dark grays and blacks for their main color palette, characteristic of Snyder’s gritty cinematography. This is in stark contrast to the infamous red color grading from the theatrical cut.
We finish out the trailer with a look at our Justice League coming together united against the looming threat of Darkseid and Steppenwolf and their Parademons. Here, we are finally able to see Snyder’s full original vision coming to life onscreen.
During the remainder of the panel, Snyder discussed what we can expect in his cut of the film. Snyder relayed that the main motif of the film will be family and focus on the Justice League as a collection of outcasts and individuals who do not fit into the normal world who find camaraderie and solidarity with each other.
Snyder revealed that Victor Stone/Cyborg will be the heart of the movie and was always intended to be one of its frontmost main characters, something that was lacking in the theatrical cut. Snyder said that Cyborg “holds the team together” and fleshes his character out the most in his cut.
Similarly, Snyder promises tons more of Ezra Miller’s Flash and teases that we will see the pure awe-inspiring aspects of his abilities relating to time and quantum physics. The movie will also explore Flash’s emotional character arc with his father in prison and the unsolved death of his mother, which will be further explored in his upcoming solo movie.
Snyder also promises that his cut of “Justice League” will be mythological and resemble the grand legendary tales of Joseph Campbell from the early 20th-Century. With characters like Aquaman and Wonder Woman and Superman, Snyder claims the film will be the thing of myth and legend.
Snyder also revealed that his cut of the film will be displayed in 4 one-hour parts, but HBO Max will have an option to play it as one large movie.
