‘Captain Marvel 2’ Hires ‘Candyman’ Director Nia DaCosta
Deadline reports that Marvel Studios has found their director for the sequel to the 2019 smash hit “Captain Marvel” in Nia DaCosta, best known as the director of the upcoming “Candyman” reboot.
DaCosta will replace Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck, the co-directors of the first “Captain Marvel.” Bowden and Fleck are still signed on to produce the sequel, with Brie Larson, set to return as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.
DaCosta met with Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige this past weekend to discuss directing the film, and it appears she has beaten out all her competition in doing so.
Marvel Studios is no stranger to changing up directors within its solo franchises and has done this with such franchises as “Thor,” “Iron Man,” and “Captain America.” Now it seems that the cosmic adventures of Carol Danvers will follow suit.
New to big blockbusters, DaCosta is directing the remake of the 90s cult-classic horror movie “Candyman.” The film was initially set to release on June 12 and now releasing on October 16. Previously, DaCosta was the writer and director of the 2018 crime thriller “Little Woods” with Tessa Thompson and Lily James and has two directing credits on the British crime drama series “Top Boy” from last year.
The first “Captain Marvel” grossed $1.13 billion at the box office, making it only the fourth MCU solo release to gross over a billion dollars. If DaCosta’s previous work is any indication, we can only have high hopes this sequel, under her direction, will be just as good, if not better.
“Captain Marvel 2” will be written by screenwriter Megan McDonnell, best known for being a staff writer on the upcoming Disney+ series “WandaVision.” Currently, “Captain Marvel 2” is slated to begin principal photography in Spring 2021 for a July 8, 2022 release as the second MCU film in Phase 5.
