Netflix Drops Trailer for New Limited Series, "The Queen's Gambit"
“Someday you’re going to be all alone, so you need to learn how to take care of yourself.”
Netflix dropped the trailer for its new limited series, THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, the show centers around Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy), a drug-addicted, orphaned, child chess prodigy who rises to fame as a woman in a man’s world. The period-set drama looks to be a fascinating character study and social commentary on toxic masculinity.
The trailer shows flashes of Harmon at different stages of her life, from when she a young girl at just eight-years old, to her modern-day status as the troubled chess phenomenon driven by obsession. “Maybe it’s in my blood,” Harmon tells a friend in the trailer. “My mother went crazy.”
“Went crazy, or always was?” her friend echoes back.
Glimpses of the set pieces feel subdued yet glamorous; gorgeous tones of pinks, greens, and yellows with patterned textures and floral prints that make the world feel full in contrast to Harmon’s dreary demeanor. Quick cuts of Harmon at the U.S. Open Championship, practicing her strategy in a bathtub, or giving an interview for Life magazine gives the viewer a sort of discombobulating feeling that seems to match her mindset.
Created, produced, written, and directed by Scott Frank (LOGAN, MINORITY REPORT), and co-starring Harry Melling and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT looks to be a sleek and stylistic series which streams exclusively on Netflix beginning on October 23rd.
