The streaming behemoth just revealed on Twitter that it will be unveiling a special reunion sequel that will bring together the cast of Father of The Bride made to benefit the World Central Kitchen charity. Entitled Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), the special will be written and directed by Nancy Meyers who helmed and co wrote the previous two movies and bring together original cast members Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short, Kimberley Williams and more.

This official confirmation from Netflix finalizes what Meyers had been hinting at for weeks on her Instagram account. The writer/director known for star studded rom-coms such as What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give and The Intern just came off a virtual reunion for another one of her films by having the cast of the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap back together.

Although she has only directed a few films throughout her career, Meyers remains a bankable and respected female filmmaker known for writing strong female roles, charming romances and a very unique taste in interior design.

A remake of the 1950 Spencer Tracy film of the same name, Father of The Bride became a sleeper hit in 1991 grossing $129 million worldwide on a $20 million budget and making even more in home video revenue. It remains one of Martin’s most successful and beloved films. In 1995, a sequel with the same cast and crew was released and although it wasn’t as big a hit as its predecessor, it did manage a decent $76.6 million gross.

It’s no surprise that Netflix is jumping in on the reunion special game as new streaming rival HBO Max has been going full speed ahead on the genre with specials bringing together the casts of Friends, The West Wing and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. However, what is interesting about the distribution is that it is not being released on Disney+ as the Mouse House released the previous two films under the long dormant Touchstone Pictures label. And with development of yet another Father of The Bride remake for Disney+, you would think they would leap at the opportunity to be apart of this. Either way, this another get for Netflix
