The wait is over—the highly-anticipated trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of DUNE dropped today.

There was a marketing tease on Twitter this morning as the studio opted to release a cast Q&A in place of the footage, only to ultimately drop the trailer 15 minutes early. Those who have read the book(s) often cite it as a complicated read, and it seems like Villeneuve is not shying away from tackling the hard elements onscreen. The director has already vocalized his desire to split the story into two films, and a spin-off show which focuses on the female characters is already in development at HBO.

Warner Bros. gives this synopsis of the film on IMDb:

“A mythic and emotionally charged hero's journey, "Dune" tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.”

The trailer, filled with beautiful imagery, gives us an inside look into a world so massive in scale that it demands to be seen on the big screen. The cold and dreary color palette that compares closely to ARRIVAL is contrasted by the gorgeous oranges and neutrals of the desert. Villeneuve gives us brief glimpses into each of the main characters, save for just a passing glance at Javier Bardem who is otherwise notably absent in the trailer. Pull-quotes from the script, interwoven with explosions, battle cries, and sweeping landscapes creates a pulsating and breath-taking first look into what looks to be one of the best films of the year.

The film has been ranked high for many as Villeneuve continues to become a household favorite, and with a stacked cast that includes Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin, DUNE seems like a surefire winner for the Oscars next year.
