The first trailer for “Halloween Kills” was released on Thursday by Universal. Following the successful reboot of the Halloween franchise in 2018's “Halloween”, the sequel looks to maintain that momentum as the second entry in a planned trilogy. Horror fans and critics alike were pleasantly surprised by the new reboot, which broke a decades-long streak of sequels and remakes not quite capturing the magic of John Carpenter’s original 1978 masterwork.

Following the events of the first film, we see the house that Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) had set fire to in order to kill Michael Myers, salvaged by firefighters. In the dying flames, we see Michael escape and go on a rampage against all in his way, including the firefighters who saved his life. The trailer is packed with tons of gory Michael kills, including via fluorescent light, swing sets, a fireman's axe, and his classic chef's knife. But what really stands out in this trailer is what seems to be a whole mob of people behind the movement to catch Michael. Several shots showing crowds chanting, people with guns, and other shots including a group of men with baseball bats and hockey sticks, all ready for action. One scene even has Laurie's daughter Karen (Judy Greer) holding up the infamous mask, asking Michael if he wants it.

As with all Halloween films, the story can get a bit predictable seeing as Michael Myers seems to be an immortal being of unknown origin. A rebellious town full of people is more than Michael has ever handled, however, and hints at a new spin on the series’ conventions. Has he finally met his match? Probably not, but more people equals more gory deaths which is what draws audiences to slasher films.

“Halloween Kills” is directed by David Gordon Green and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, and James Jude Courtney as Michael Myers, and is scheduled to release in theatres on October 15th, 2021.
