'Scary Movie' is Back After a Lucky 13 Years
Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.
The iconic horror parody franchise is making a massive return after a 13-year hiatus with a new installment titled simply Scary Movie (also known as Scary Movie 6). Scheduled for theatrical release on June 5, 2026, the film marks the first time the original creative architects have been involved in over two decades. Marlon Wayans has gone on record, promising a "no holds barred" approach intended to "cancel cancel culture" with raw, R-rated humor.
The most significant development is the return of the Wayans brothers—Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory—who have not collaborated on the franchise since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. The brothers are writing and producing alongside Rick Alvarez, while Michael Tiddes, a frequent collaborator with Marlon Wayans (known for A Haunted House), is directing the project. The Wayans family has also extended its family reach, bringing in fellow family members and seasoned comedians Damon Wayans Jr. and Kim Wayans to the cast.
Marlon Wayans has cited the downfall of former producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein as a primary reason the family felt comfortable returning to their creation. The film serves as a "rebooquel," reuniting the original "Core Four" cast members who defined the series' early success - Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell, Regina Hall as Brenda Meeks, Marlon Wayans as Shorty Meeks and Shawn Wayans as Ray Wilkins. There will also be surprise returns of veterans of the franchise, as the ensemble also includes Anthony Anderson, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Chris Elliott, Jon Abrahams and Cheri Oteri.
While the original films focused on 90s slashers, the new installment takes aim at the current era of "elevated horror" and recent viral hits. Who can blame them, as the Wayans now have over a decade of horror films to make fun of. Confirmed parodies from the first trailer include Get Out, Nope, The Substance and Longlegs while blockbusters such as Sinners, Weapons, M3GAN, Smile and A Quiet Place seem to be victims of the parody as well. Most notably however, it seems like Damien Leone’s Art the Clown from the Terrifier franchise has unofficially (or maybe officially) joined the cast.
