'Mortal Kombat II' Doubles Down with Second Trailer

The official trailer for Mortal Kombat II finally focuses on the actual tournament and introducing fan-favorite Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban which seems to signify a new beginning for the franchise. The film is directed by Simon McQuoid and features an expanded ‘player select screen’ including Shao Kahn, Kitana, and Jade among others added to the roster. The trailer hints at the return of characters thought dead, including Sub-Zero (potentially as Noob Saibot) and Kung Lao, so in typical Mortal Kombat fashion, death does not necessarily spell the end for these characters.

At first look, Shao Kahn, played by Martyn Ford reveals that the emperor is depicted as an imposing warlord, but may still be in the infancy of his power. Ford’s impressive stature is arguably the most intimidating audiences have seen on screen when it comes to live action adaptations of the character. Kitana and Jade (played by Adeline Rudolph (Kitana) and Tati Gabrielle (Jade) show up and are appropriately mysterious. Nothing is really known about them at this point, other than the fact they are introduced as lethal warriors from Outworld.

The trailer is quite a tonal shift from the first film, as the gritty origin story has changed to high-stakes summer spectacle. While the 2021 film was noted for its somewhat "grim" and slow-paced setup, the second trailer for the sequel indicates a more confident, larger-scale approach. Much of the trailer's tonal pivot is anchored by Karl Urban's Johnny Cage. His character introduces a "self-deprecating" humor and cocky arrogance that leans into the sillier, fun trappings of the original video games.

Despite the humor, the atmosphere retains some intense emotional stakes when focusing on the core conflict. The trailer highlights internal struggles for characters like Liu Kang and Raiden, as well as Johnny’s doubt in himself in the start of his journey, framing the tournament as a desperate battle for survival against Shao Kahn's evil regime.

Fan’s will undoubtedly be looking forward to Karl Urban's Johnny Cage, as the character really takes center stage in the trailer as a "washed-up" Hollywood star thrust into the tournament. The first trailer showcased his signature sunglasses, cocky one-liners, and a "mock promo" titled Uncaged Fury that features warehouse battles and a confrontation with the Tarkatan warrior Baraka.

Unlike the first film, which focused on the "Arcana" setup, this sequel leans into the official Mortal Kombat tournament. Losing the tournament would allow Emperor Shao Kahn to merge Outworld and Earthrealm, which would spell the end of existence as we know it. The stakes are significantly higher than the first film, and while they’re embracing the humor, the trailer certainly sets the tone. It promises to honor the games' legacy with creative and bone-crushing fatalities shown in stylized slow-motion.

Fans have also noticed that the 2021 film's protagonist, Cole Young (Lewis Tan), is nearly absent from the main trailer, suggesting a pivot toward the more established game characters as the primary leads, and perhaps even hinting at Cole’s fate. One of the major critiques of the original film was the focus on Cole, and original character as the central figure of Mortal Kombat, when there is such a rich cavalcade of characters to choose from.
